Oral History: Linking the Past and Present
Mrs. Katherine Briggs:
Mrs. Briggs, a native of Canada, moved to Northern New York in the 1960's. From 1962-1964, Mrs. Briggs worked at the St. Lawrence State Hospital as a social worker. Her position helped create a link between the institution and the community, and speaking with her gave me valuable insight on this symbiotic relationship. Mr. Brian Doe:
Mr. Brian Doe, a native to the North Country, was an integral part in creating an understanding of the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center and its relationship with the community, and was kind enough to grant me an interview with him. Due to technical setbacks, the interview did not record properly; however much of the information that can be found on the website was first mentioned to me by Mr. Doe!
In creating this website, I have realized the history of the St. Lawrence State Hospital/St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center is of great interest to me. Because of this, I plan to interview more individuals from the community who were, or still are, employed at the institution. I have currently conducted two oral history interviews for the project, but anticipate adding many more interviews as time goes on. Stay tuned to listen to North Country locals discuss the influence of the institution on the community, and to hear their fascinating experiences with the hospital.
